Cross platform

  • Building4Media’s software products support both Mac OS and Windows, also in mixed environments. This means that for instance the “Mac world” of post-production can be integrated with the “Windows world” of the newsroom.
  • Supports QuickTime and MXF for ingest and playout.

Apple Final Cut Pro integration

  • The FCP users get full access to the central media asset management system in our software.
  • The interface of our software is an extension of the interface of Final Cut Pro (shortly).
  • Users can control ingest, print-to-tape, etc. from their edit set.
  • One or more files can be selected and are placed automatically on the timeline of Final Cut Pro.
  • “Send to” function to send the content automatically back to the central media asset management system, which also automatically stores metadata.
  • Many settings are being taken care of during the installation and won’t bother the users anymore.

Integration of other video, audio and graphics editors

  • Supports integration on file level and video level.
  • For video level integration advanced VTR emulation is used.
  • The users get full access to the central media asset management system in the FORK software, using our client software on the desktop of their editor.

Integration with newsroom systems

  • Integration with ENPS, iNews, NorCom and Octopus.

 Redundant servers

  • Redundancy is built into the heart of our media asset management system.
  • Redundant servers include automatic synchronisation of metadata and (if needed) content.
  • Any level of redundancy can be provided, redundant storage and redundant server software, including automatic fail-over.

Redundant storage on the Xsan

  • Our media asset management can store content automatically in two sections (LUN’s) of the Xsan.
  • Automatic fail-over in case the main storage section fails.
  • No additional hardware required.
  • 100% transparent for video. While other hardware solutions are not 100% transparent, they cause problems in installations.

Scalability

  • Server based software (client/server), so that any number of users can have access to the system and users can share several clients on their desktop.
  • Server based software, so that central tasks that required a lot of performance (for instance transcoding and rendering), can be divided over as many processors as is needed.
  • Scalable in all dimensions (number of users, number of devices to control, size of the storage, etc.)

Ingest

  • Supports any type of ingests: regular ingest from VTR’s via media converters and over FireWire, crash recording, scheduled ingest, etc.
  • Supports local ingest, but also central ingest. With central ingest, the user can start browsing and editing during ingest, and the content is right away available for all users.
  • VTR’s can be assigned automatically, so that VTR’s can be shared and less VTR’s are required. Our software knows the distances between the workstations and the VTR’s.
  • Auto-routing of the content through the system. The users just have to select source en destination and our software take care of the routing, including priorities, reservations for the future, etc. This way the users can concentrate on their content and user errors are avoided.
  • Equipment pool sharing (facility management) because for instance VTR’s can be automatically shared between users.
  • Streaming video of the ingest stream over the network. Saves video monitors and cables.
  • During ingest markers can be placed with metadata. Markers and their metadata can be searched in the media asset management system and can be used in our cuts-only editor and in Apple FCP.
  • Supports QuickTime and MXF for ingest and playout.

Proxies

  • (Almost) all formats and qualities supported for the proxies.
  • Supports more than one proxy.
  • During ingest proxies are available with a delay of one frame.
  • Proxies can be used instantly for browsing and editing in our cuts-only editor and Apple Final Cut Pro.
  • Our media asset management system can switch the references in an EDL instantly from the proxy content to the high-res content.
  • The proxies of the archived content can remain on-line, for instant browsing and editing. During editing the high-res content can automatically be re-ingested again.

Cuts-only editing

  • Our FORK Editor supports cuts-only editing, audio levels, voice-overs and titles.
  • Voice-overs can be added on the desktop or in a voice booth.
  • The titles can be based on templates.  These titles are not burned into the video, so you will have clean content in your archive and when the house style of your station changes, the titles can be updated automatically.
  • Full integration with FCP. The complete project can be send to FCP for further editing.
  • Our cuts-only editor is probably the only client/server-based editor, built around our central media asset management system. This gives you the tightest integrated workflow and that users can even work in the same timeline together.

Media asset management

  • Supports (almost) any format and quality as a proxy.
  • Supports one or more proxies.
  • Advanced management of different formats and qualities of content and of reference files that link to the content, including warnings when users try to delete the highest quality and automatic deletion of all files of the content, if required.
  • Virtualisation of several physical servers into one logical server for the users, to increase the user-friendliness of the system.

Workflow management

  • Elegant building blocks make it possible to automate almost any workflow, improve efficiency and eliminate repetitive jobs and user errors.

Print-to-tape

  • One or more files can be played out to tape in a customizable way.

Live assist playout

  • Building the playlist with drag-and-drop from the media asset management system.
  • Playout of a single clip or playlists.
  • Synchronised playout.
  • Looped playout.
  • Any number of channels.
  • Recently further developed together with our customer CNN in Washington DC.

Playout options

  • Building4Media offers an extensive range of software products for high-end and entry-level playout master control automation. Of course our playout software products are fully integrated with our production software products.
  • Building4Media offers a VDCP interface so that other third-party live-assist playout and playout automation products can control as a broadcast video server our software products and the Apple platform.

Transcoding

  • Supports (almost) all formats and qualities, including for mobile phones.
  • Integration of all types of transcoders in an automated workflow.
  • Automated delivery of multiple sets of content to multiple locations.

Archiving

  • Automatic and manual archiving and re-ingesting.
  • Proxies of archived content can remain on-line for instant browsing and editing - during editing the high-res content is automatically re-ingested.
  • Control of most archive devices.
